YOUR PENOBSCOT VALLEY WEEKEND STARTS HERE
October’s first weekend brings plenty to do across the Penobscot Valley.
Downtown Bangor hosts the Fall Sidewalk Art Festival, the Queen City Expo runs Friday through Sunday, and the Maine Forest & Logging Museum’s Living History Days return to Bradley Saturday and Sunday.
Orono will also be especially busy with UMaine Family & Friends Weekend and Saturday afternoon Black Bears football.
Add in farmers’ markets, fall destinations, local performances, and a few events worth planning ahead for, and there is plenty happening from Friday through Monday.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Orono will be busy Saturday. UMaine’s Family & Friends Weekend runs Friday through Sunday, and the Black Bears host Bryant at 3:30 PM Saturday at Morse Field. UMaine says the weekend brings thousands of family members to campus, so allow extra time around Orono and the university Saturday afternoon. Downtown Bangor will also draw a crowd Saturday. The Fall Sidewalk Art Festival runs from 9 AM to 4 PM with more than 75 Maine artists and makers, live music, and food trucks throughout downtown.
Brewer residents: Friday at 1 PM is an important deadline. Brewer’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection is Saturday from 8 AM to noon at Brewer Public Works, 221 Green Point Road. Pre-registration by 1 PM Friday is required for free participation; otherwise the city charges $6 per gallon. Proof of Brewer residency is required.
Weekend tip: With major activity in both Bangor and Orono on Saturday, give yourself a little extra travel and parking time if your plans take you through either area. |

Walden-Parke Preserve — Bangor Tucked beside Bangor City Forest, Walden-Parke Preserve offers a quieter side of Bangor’s outdoor network.
The preserve includes more than 500 acres of forest, wetlands, vernal pools, and part of Caribou Bog. The best-known route is the Blue Jay Loop, an easy-to-walk trail of about 2½ miles beginning near the end of Tamarack Trail off Walden Parke Way.
This is a good early-October stop for a relaxed walk among hardwoods, wetlands, and fall color without leaving Bangor. Leashed dogs are permitted on the Blue Jay Loop.

THIS WEEK ON MAINE THRIVE VOICES
Episode 14: Molly & Paige — Tides to Pines This week on Maine Thrive Voices, Sandy sits down with Molly and Paige of Tides to Pines for a conversation about how two people with different backgrounds and perspectives came together to build something of their own.
They talk about the path that brought them together, the leap from idea to action, and what it takes to turn “we should do this” into “we’re doing it.”
It’s a conversation about partnership, entrepreneurship, and building a business here in Maine — with plenty of personality along the way.

BEST OF THE PENOBSCOT VALLEY
Brewer Riverwalk & Children’s Garden Sometimes one of the best places in the Penobscot Valley is also one of the easiest to overlook.
The Brewer Riverwalk follows the Penobscot River through a landscaped waterfront corridor with paved paths, benches, river views, and the Penobscot Landing Children’s Garden. The garden includes themed plantings, picnic tables, chess tables, and a small waterfall.
The completed Riverwalk extends about one mile, connecting several sections of Brewer’s waterfront and passing beneath the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge. It also includes an outdoor fitness area and multiple access points with nearby parking.
Early October is a particularly nice time to walk it: cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and open views across the river toward Bangor.

October is always a turning point here in Maine.
The mornings are cooler, the leaves are changing, and suddenly we start measuring weekends a little differently. There are only so many chances to get outside, visit a market, take a walk, or catch an event before the season changes again.
That’s one of the reasons I enjoy putting this Weekend Edition together. It is a reminder that we don’t always have to go very far to find something worth doing.
Whatever you choose this weekend, I hope you get a chance to enjoy a little bit of what makes the Penobscot Valley such a good place to call home.
Scout & I will see you again on Tuesday. Have a Great Weekend!
