Meet Maui

For families considering cat adoption in the Penobscot Valley, Maui may be worth a closer look, even if he keeps his distance at first.

The two-year-old cat is still gaining confidence around unfamiliar people and places, and a quiet first meeting may not reveal his affectionate side.

He does have an endearing habit of kneading with his paws, offering a glimpse of how comfortable he can feel.

Patience will matter more than a quick introduction.

A calm space, a predictable routine and the freedom to approach on his own terms could help Maui settle into a new home.

Before adopting, ask his current caregivers about his availability, adoption requirements and what helps him relax.

For someone ready to give a shy cat time to build trust, Maui could become a welcome companion.

Meet Pip

In the Penobscot Valley, 14-year-old Pip is looking for a peaceful home and someone who enjoys quiet companionship.

Affectionate and easygoing, he would be happiest spending his days near his person, perhaps dozing beside a comfortable recliner.

Pip has had urinary tract problems, so his adopter must be prepared for ongoing veterinary care and a consistent prescription diet.

Surgery has helped him feel more comfortable, but his medical needs remain part of daily life.

A household with excitable dogs or very young children could be too stressful for him.

Before adopting, families should ask about his current care instructions, expected costs and signs of changes in his health.

For someone with a calm home, steady routines and room for an occasional snore, Pip could be a lovely match.

Recipe of the Week

Butternut Squash Soup
Makes six 1-cup servings.

Ingredients
  • 1 large butternut squash, or a 20-ounce bag of frozen squash
  • ½ cup chopped scallions
  • 3 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth
  • 2 carrots, peeled and sliced
  • 1 chopped apple
  • 1 potato, peeled and chopped
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, or 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 5 ounces fat-free evaporated milk

Directions
  1. If using fresh squash, peel it, remove the seeds and cut it into chunks.
  2. Put all ingredients except the milk in a 3-quart saucepan. Cover and cook over medium heat for about 30 minutes, until the vegetables soften.
  3. Blend until smooth with an immersion blender, or carefully purée in small batches in a blender suitable for hot liquids.

Sandy’s Maine Minute

One thing I appreciate about living here is how often neighbors show up for one another. Sometimes it’s helping a family through a tough week, supporting a local business or inviting someone along to an event. Those small gestures make a difference.

If you find something useful here, pass it along to someone who might appreciate it. Sometimes that small act is the connection that matters.
