Penobscot Valley Voice Weekend Edition #55, October 16–19, 2026

YOUR PENOBSCOT VALLEY WEEKEND STARTS HERE

There’s more than one way to spend an October weekend in the Valley: follow a nature trail in costume, settle in for live bluegrass, or make an afternoon of the symphony.

Saturday brings the Trick-or-Treat Trail at Walden-Parke Preserve, the Maine Witch Walk and Goblin Market on Bangor’s waterfront, and Rock Hearts at the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft. Sunday, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra opens its season at the Collins Center for the Arts in Orono.

There are farmers’ markets to visit along the way, including the final Saturday listed on Orono’s outdoor schedule. We’re also sharing a preview of our upcoming Maine Thrive Voices conversation with Jennifer Goddard.

WEEKEND WEATHER

Friday, October 16–Monday, October 19 | Bangor-area forecast

Friday: Periods of rain. High 55°F; low 39°F.

Saturday: Variable clouds with a couple of showers and windy conditions. High 49°F; low 27°F.

Monday: Plenty of sunshine. High 58°F; low 36°F.

Weekend takeaway: Bring rain gear Friday and layers for Saturday’s outdoor events. Secure loose decorations against gusty winds. Saturday night drops below freezing; Sunday offers a sunny afternoon.

Conditions may vary across the Valley.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Bangor — I-95 at Broadway, Exit 185: October 16–19 brings changing southbound lane and ramp closures as traffic shifts onto the new bridge. When the southbound off-ramp closes, use Exit 186 and follow the Stillwater Avenue detour to Broadway. If the southbound on-ramp closes, follow signs via Stillwater Avenue to enter at Exit 186. Allow extra time.

Old Town — Stillwater Avenue: Bridge demolition may cause intermittent closures of the temporary Stillwater River bridge between 9 AM and 3 PM, potentially continuing into the week of October 19. Follow the signed detour via Bennoch Road, North Main Street and College Avenue. Timing depends on construction and weather.

Brewer–Holden — Route 1A: Night paving is scheduled through October 23. Crews maintain two-way traffic using the remaining lanes, but drivers should expect delays near the I-395/Route 9 Connector corridor and east toward Copeland Hill Road.

HIDDEN GEM OF THE WEEK

Central Penjajawoc Preserve — Bangor

For a quieter break between weekend events, consider Central Penjajawoc Preserve. Bangor Land Trust protects 265 acres of forest and fields here, with a double-loop walking trail totaling 1.8 miles.

The entrance is off Essex Street, about 400 yards south of its intersection with Burleigh Road, with a small parking area below road level. The trail is for pedestrians, with no bicycles; the land trust also asks visitors to leave pets at home to protect wildlife and respect other walkers.

Why it matters: this is a chance to spend time in a substantial protected landscape without leaving Bangor. The two connected loops offer a simple walking destination when you want a change of pace from the weekend’s crowds.

BEST OF THE PENOBSCOT VALLEY

Zillman Art Museum — Bangor

For an indoor stop this weekend, make time for the University of Maine’s Zillman Art Museum at 40 Harlow Street. The museum focuses on modern and contemporary art and offers free admission through support from Birchbrook.

Its published hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10 AM–5 PM, making Friday and Saturday the days to visit during this weekend’s coverage window. Pair a gallery visit with another downtown stop, or give yourself time to look slowly and enjoy a quieter part of the day.

Our pick is about access as much as art: a museum visit here can be part of a weekend without adding an admission charge.

Plan your visit

October weekends can fill up quickly, but I hope you find room for something you’ll enjoy—whether that’s a concert, a market visit, or a little time outdoors.

I also look forward to sharing Episode 16 of Maine Thrive Voices with Jennifer Goddard. These conversations are another way we get to know the people who help make Maine what it is.

Thanks for spending part of your week with Penobscot Valley Voice. Scout and I will see you Tuesday. Have a great weekend!
